LEADERSHIP

As i write the race is on in the Tory leadership contest as to who will succeed Boris Johnson and become the next party leader and prime minister.

Opinions vary as to whether Mr. Johnson was a good and effective leader. Whatever we debate and discuss in life there will always be
differences of opinion. There is a saying `never to mix politics and religion` and so i will leave this thought with you and move on to another kind of leadership or person who has been an example in our lives.

For me an early example was my grandmother. Together with my granddad they were farmers. A special treat for me in school holidays was to stay with them on their farm and help with jobs such as feeding the farm animals and riding on the tractor with granddad. It was an idyllic existence and one which i look back on with gratitude.
For Grandma Sunday was a day of rest as far as possible and attendance at two services at the Primitive Methodist Church in the village were they lived. I went with her and came to appreciate just how much Grandmas faith meant to her. Did she have an influence on my later years in joining the church? I like to think so. Her kind and caring ways were a true example of the Christian way of life.

My time as a prison chaplain brought me into contact with many men who had never had a good upbringing.Their parents may have been cruel and unkind.
Of course it dosen`t always follow that everyone who has a bad upbringing ends up in prison but many do.

Whether we are a are a parent or not we can all be a role model and an example to someone else. We may never know how the example we have set has influenced someone else’s life. You and i can be an influence for good to others and all it takes is for us to examine our lives and make any adjustments to benefit others. Not much to ask really!
